About the A-League 2023-2024

The 2023–24 A-League Football Season is in full flight, with the Isuzu UTE A-League men’s competition having kicked off on Friday, October 20, as Adelaide United took the Central Coast Mariners 3-0 at Coopers Stadium. Meanwhile the Liberty A-League women’s hit the ground running a week earlier on the 14th, when the Newcastle Jets beat the Central Coast Mariners 1-0 at Industree Group Stadium, Perth Glory defeated Western United 2-0 at Macedonia Park, and Sydney FC got the best of the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0 at Allianz Stadium. Play continues until the Grand Finals for both leagues in May 2024.

What teams play in the A-League 2023-2024?

Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Wellington Phoenix, Western Sydney Wanderers, and Western United are fielding teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with Macarthur FC fielding only a men’s side.

Who's the favourite to win the A-League 2023-2024?

While the Central Coast Mariners are the defending champions in the Isuzu UTE A-League, the smart money right now is on defending premiers Melbourne City to take home the Toilet Seat, although the Mariners are ranked equal second with the Western Sydney Wanderers. Meanwhile, there’s not much speculation regarding the Liberty A-League, with defending premiers and champions Sydney FC a cautious fave to take home the glory. The wild card in play is the Central Coast Mariners, making a return to the league for the first time since 2009, having bowed out in the interim due to a lack of funding.

A-League History

A-League Men was inaugurated in 2004 by the Football Federation Australia, superseding the National Soccer League, which was very much on its last legs at that point. That same year saw the dissolution of the Women’s National Soccer League, only returning in the form of the A-League Women in 2008. Things have certainly changed since then, however; the sport has seen huge gains in popularity, with women’s football in particular seeing a massive uptick thanks to the Matildas’ recent spectacular performance on the international stage.

In the women's league, Melbourne City and Sydney FC tie for Most Championships (4), with Sydney comfortably leading for most Premierships (5). And speaking of the Matildas, sensational Sam Kerr is currently tied for Most Julie Dolan Medals with now-retired Canberra United striker Michelle Heyman, with two each.
