6 shows arriving in July that we’re excited about
A few thrills, a little romance, and lots of comedy will keep you company in the month of July. Here are the new shows arriving to streaming that we’re most excited about…
Gold Diggers
A new Aussie comedy is always something worth cheering for, especially when it stars two hilarious women like Claire Lovering and Danielle Walker. They play sisters Gert and Marigold who, in 1850, try to take advantage of the gold rush by snaring newly-rich husbands. The humour is brash and sharp, the production is slick, and the performances are engaging. The cast is rounded out by Michala Banas, Kartanya Maynard, Eddie Perfect, Lincoln Younes, JJ Fong, and George Zhao.
The Horror of Dolores Roach
Offering a modern twist on Sweeney Todd and based on the hit scripted Spotify podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach is a comedy-horror Blumhouse production about a woman named Dolores Roach (Justina Machado) who is struggling to find her feet after spending 16 years in prison. She sets up a massage business in the basement of an empanada shop owned by her stoner friend Luis, but a bad run-in with a customer soon takes a deadly—and cannibalistic—turn. Both funny and horrifying, Dolores Roach is like nothing else on TV right now.
No Escape
This British thriller, based on the novel The Blue by Lucy Clark, follows two young women, Lana (Abigail Lawrie) and Kitty (Rhianne Barreto), as they join the rag-tag crew of a yacht in the Philippines called The Blue. They’re in their own personal paradise…until things go drastically wrong, and they’re stuck in the middle of the ocean with nowhere to run. No Escape is gripping viewing, with a tight plot, intriguing array of characters, and stunning backdrop. Jay Ryan, Sean Keenan, and Susie Porter also star.
Survival of the Thickest
Co-created by and starring Michelle Buteau, and inspired by her own memoir of the same name, Survival of the Thickest is an A24 series about a newly-single woman named Mavis Beaumont who is trying to get her life back on track and embrace her newfound independence. She struggles to build her career as a stylist while navigating personal drama. With fun costumes, irreverent humour, and delightful performances, it looks to be a promising, body positive comedy.
Full Circle
An incredible cast including Claire Danes, Timothy Olyphant, Zazie Beetz, and Dennis Quaid star in this limited crime series, which is directed by Steven Soderbergh. It centres on a family whose life—and secrets—unravel after a botched kidnapping. Expect lots of twists and turns and unconventional storytelling. With such a cast and crew, it will certainly help fill the huge hole in the prestige end of the TV landscape for the month.
A Perfect Story
If your idea of a perfect story involves romance, pretty people, and even prettier settings, then this indeed is the show for you. Filmed in Madrid and the Greek Islands and based on a best-selling novel by award-winning Spanish writer Elisabet Benavent, A Perfect Story is about hotel heiress Margot (Anna Castillo) and working class David (Alvaro Mel), two people from totally different worlds whose paths cross when Margot flees her own wedding. They decide to help each other win back the loves of their lives, and naturally chaos (and romance) ensues. A swoony watch that’s the perfect summery escapism in the middle of winter.
