7 TV shows arriving in October that we’re excited about
October brings with it a lot of chills and thrills (murders and secrets and aliens, oh my!), but there’s also a dash of comedy coming to streaming services this month if you’re after something lighter.
Here are the new shows we’re most excited about…
Sort Of (October 6)
Coming to StanBilal Baig co-created and stars in this Canadian dramedy about a genderfluid twentysomething named Sabi, who is trying to balance the expectations of their traditional Pakistani family with being true to themselves while working as a bartender at a LGBTQ+ bookstore/café and also as a nanny. Blending humour and heart, it’s the kind of story that isn’t often told on our screens, and is all the more vital for that reason.
One of Us is Lying (October 8)
Coming to StanBased on the popular young adult novel of the same name by Karen M McManus and directed by Jennifer Morrison (who is best known for starring in Once Upon A Time), One of Us is Lying takes the premise of The Breakfast Club and asks the question: what if one of them died during detention in suspicious circumstances? And the victim happened to be a Gossip Girl-style character, who everyone had a reason to hate? Enter a thrilling murder mystery full of secrets and twists: exactly the kind of juicy teen drama we need right now.
My Name (October 15)
Coming to NetflixIf Squid Game is your current obsession like, oh, just about everyone else in the entire world, and you’re interested in delving into more dark Korean drama, this might be the show for you. It’s about a woman who joins a gang in order to avenge her father’s death, and winds up going undercover as a cop. It looks to be a bloody, violent, action-packed and cathartic ride.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (October 15)
Coming to Prime VideoEverything ‘90s is now, baby! The latest reboot of a ‘90s icon is I Know What You Did Last Summer, now in series form (actually, both the movie and the show are based on the 1973 book of the same name by Lois Duncan). Produced by Aussie James Wan of Saw and Insidious fame, the series keeps the premise of a group of teens covering up a hit-and-run and then being stalked and killed by someone who ~knows what they did~, but adds a more diverse cast, more characters, and way more angst.
Inside Job (October 22)
Coming to NetflixIf you’re a fan of adult animation, get excited about this series from Gravity Falls and Regular Show writer Shion Taekuchi. It’s the perfect premise for our fractured times: imagine a world where every conspiracy theory is actually true, and one woman (and the reptilian shapeshifters and psychedelic mushrooms she works with) at a shadow government agency called Cognito, Inc must keep the chaos in check. The show has a star-studded voice cast, including Lizzy Caplan in the lead role, along with Christian Slater, Clark Duke, and John DiMaggio.
Invasion (October 22)
Coming to Apple TV+Alien invasion stories that come out of Hollywood typically tend to be very, well, American, with little regard to what might be happening elsewhere around the globe. This series seeks to remedy that old trope, with events unfolding across multiple countries, told from the perspective of several different characters. The series was co-created by The Martian’s Simon Kinberg and David Weil, and the cast includes everyone’s fave Kiwi farm uncle, Sam Neill.
Angela Black (October)
Coming to StanJoanne Froggatt, Michiel Huisman, and Samuel Adewumni star in this British psychological thriller created by Harry and Jack Williams, the brothers behind shows like The Missing, The Widow and Liar. Froggatt plays the titular Angela Black, a woman who leads a seemingly idyllic life but who feels trapped in an abusive relationship. When a private investigator comes to her to reveal the dark secrets her husband has been hiding, her world is turned upside down. Be prepared for plot twists, gripping drama, and stellar acting.
