Top picks

ZOMBIES 4: Dawn of the Vampires (July 11)

Beginning as a silly Romeo and Juliet riff and continuing into a surprisingly nuanced series about race and inclusion, this franchise of Disney Channel Original Movies (or DCOMs, if you’re in the know) boils big social ideas into brightly-coloured, all-singing-all-dancing spectacles for youngsters.

First we tackled the divide between humans and the segregated undead, before werewolves and aliens were welcomed into town through music. Where else could the fourth film go but to bloodsucking territory, albeit with that Disney-fied squeaky clean teen sheen? More spoopy than spooky, and ready to spawn a hot new TikTok dance craze or two.

Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story (July 11)

The greatest creature feature ever; the first “blockbuster”; the birth of super-director Steven Spielberg; a pointed prophecy of climate inaction? Luke Buckmaster recently reflected on the politics of this seminal shark movie, as it reaches the big 5-0, writing that the film’s hero “recognises that the dangers of not acting far outweigh any momentary costs. Does that, in the context of debates around climate action, ring any bells?”

For more of a behind-the-scenes celebration, this doco should do nicely, premiering in the same month as Disney’s annual Shark Week programming, as it happens. You’re gonna need a bigger couch to take all of it in.

Washington Black: Miniseries (July 23)

Meet the other George Washington: a young Black kid taken from his Barbados home in the early 1800s, and whisked around the world on a fabulous flying machine. As you might be able to tell, Washington Black’s story is very much fictional, based on the beloved adventure novel by Esi Edugyen, but with poignant historical details fleshing the whole thing out into an authentic-feeling epic.

Ernest Kingsley Jr plays the protagonist, swept from slavery to unbelievable, Jules Verne-esque new landscapes, and Tom Ellis and Sterling K Brown offer terrific support.
