Top picks
Jolt (July 23)
Kate Beckinsale has shown us both badassery (the Underworld series) and wit (Love and Friendship) in the past, but you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry. That’s the plot of Jolt, an action-comedy in which her character frequently flips out in bouts of uncontrollable rage due to a strange neurological condition. When she finally trusts a guy long enough to fall in love with him, he’s murdered the next day, giving her a neat opportunity to unleash the beast and crack some skulls in order to find revenge.
A killer supporting cast including Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale and Laverne Cox will presumably watch from the sidelines, cheering her on in cathartic setpieces of female rage.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always (July 23)
Directed by Eliza Hittman, this clear-eyed drama shows the process of abortion without frills or unnecessary moralisation. Seventeen-year-old Autumn just can’t have a baby, and needs parental consent to have her unwanted pregnancy terminated in her home state—so her bestie and cousin Skylar steals the cash to transport both of them to New York for the most miserable interstate vacation I can think of.
The young performers are heartbreakingly natural, making this a movie you don’t want to have on in the background. Set aside some time and attention and you’ll be rewarded with an illuminating portrait of a lonely and singular experience.
Making the Cut season 2 (July 16)
If you need Tim Gunn’s voice in your ear these days, imploring you to “make it work,” Making The Cut is your best move forward. Amazon has poached both Gunn and Heidi Klum for another season of international fashion competition, awarding one lucky designer a million dollars to invest in the “next great global brand.”
With 10 new designers and new judges Winnie Harlow and Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, I’m sadly going to miss Naomi Campbell’s brutal judging from season one—when she would mercilessly bark “NEXT” at some outfits and tell other designers repeatedly that she would “not put my mother in that.”
