Best new movies and TV series on Amazon Prime Video Australia: October 2021

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Amazon Prime Video‘s Australian library. Eliza Janssen presents her picks for titles worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.

Top picks

My Name Is Pauli Murray (October 1)

Amongst the civil rights figures canonised in the history of the US, Pauli Murray is largely unsung: how has this non-binary lawyer and activist slipped under the radar, despite being a truly before-her-time pioneer in a number of intersecting fields?

Murray was the only woman in her class at Harvard and the first Black student to receive a Doctor of Judicial Science from Yale: Thurgood Marshall called one of her seminal books “the bible” of the civil rights movement, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg co-authored the pivotal Reed V. Reed sexual discrimination case with Murray. But somehow, RBG gone on to legendary acronym-only status (the documentary by that name was, in fact, directed by the maker of this film), whereas Murray has been mostly overlooked. Until now.

I Know What You Did Last Summer: Season 1 (October 15)

A whole new batch of teens must keep a deadly secret amongst themselves—and it’s not who Becky was pashing behind the bike sheds. No, this TV adaptation of a 90s adaptation of a 70s slasher novel has accidental murder as its inciting incident: a year after swearing each other to secrecy, the guilty gang of friends start getting picked off one by one.

Who’s the killer? Who let the secret out? And why are the teens seemingly covered in honey in the thumbnail above? Some kind of Candyman crossover would be totally unprecedented, but we believe that series producer and horror darling James Wan can make anything happen, so who knows.

The Green Knight (October 28)

We’ve been excited to see David Lowery’s latest movie for (middle) ages: any sadness over its lack of cinematic release across Aus, is secondary to the joyous news that we can finally see Dev Patel swinging a stupid-big axe on Amazon Prime Video.

Scoring rave reviews from critics and a very mixed, befuddled audience response, you can expect bewildering, beautiful visuals from The Green Knight, as well as surprising scenes of old-school sex and violence. There’s also a bit where a crowned Lord (Joel Edgerton) lovingly smooches Gawain (Patel), and Barry Keoghan as a pesky bandit with a bone to pick. Let this wild 14th century reimagining get medieval on your ass.
