Top Picks: TV

Barry: Season 4 (April 17)

We’re almost relieved that this is the final season of Bill Hader’s devastating hitman dramedy Barry—the existential guilt of last season was tough on our ruthless anti-hero (Hader) and us, too. Still, it’ll be tough to say goodbye to excellent characters like daggy, redeemed acting coach Gene Cousineau (Harry Winkler), Barry’s self-obsessed on-again-off-again GF Sally (Sarah Goldberg), and my comedic MVP NoHo Hank (Anthony Corrigan).

All the murder and self-discovery has been leading to this explosive set of final episodes, and Hader’s directing them all, which is mighty exciting after his Emmy-snubbed scenes of highway chases and devastating kills.

Mrs Davis: Season 1 (April 21)

From the brilliantly nuts creator of Lost and The Leftovers, here’s another somewhat dystopian sci-fi series, albeit one with a little more zingy, satirical levity. Damon Lindelof’s new joint stars the ever-entertaining Betty Gilpin as a badass nun tasked with taking on a godlike AI force. The parallels in old-world religion and this planet-absorbing new tech are obvious—believing without seeing, obedience to some omnipotent higher intelligence—but if anyone can cut through the bullshit, it’s Gilpin. Even if she’s saddled with her moustachioed ex-boyfriend in her quest. The trailer makes this series look like an unpredictable good time, with one Aussie-accented rebel leader yelling that everyone has to stop calling the AI by its name, Mrs Davis: “nobody calls Facebook ‘Doug’!!!”

Love & Death (April 27)

This true crime miniseries had to compete with another TV retelling of the exact same sordid story—where Jessica Biel wigged up to play Candy Montgomery in Candy, now it’s Elizabeth Olsen’s turn, albeit with a much more modest set of curly locks. A housewife and devout Christian, Montgomery ruined lives with a cheating scandal and a shocking, axe-swinging murder. Olsen’s typically placid and luminous screen persona will play nicely opposite Jesse Plemons, Candy’s affair partner and the husband of her very best friend (and ultimate victim) Betty Gore. Love & Death comes from TV super-producer David E. Kelley, who’s very used to working with massive stars and larger-than-life material like this.

Top Picks: Movies

Blaze (April 3)

Premiering at MIFF last year, this hard-hitting childhood fantasy is the directorial debut of celebrated painter Del Kathryn Barton. Her imagination for arcane and whimsical visuals collides head-on with a tale of trauma, when our child protagonist witnesses a horrific act of sexual assault. At times like these, often the only thing we can do to deal with a savage outside world is by going inside our own minds, and luckily for us viewers, the kiddo’s inventive inner world is full of protective dragons, dreamscapes, and glitter-clad fantasies of empowerment. Starring a top-tier Aussie cast that includes Simon Baker and Yael Stone, Blaze will burn you deep and recover your lost inner child from the ashes.

Moonage Daydream (April 4)

He’s an alligator, he’s a mama-papa coming for you, and he’s never looked better than in this trippy memorial feature. David Bowie’s unseen concert footage and greatest psychedelic visuals get remixed in this documentary, to which the late glam rocker’s estate gave their stamp of approval (unlike some lesser Bowie movies we won’t dwell on here). Filmmaker Brett Morgen makes his love of Bowie’s slippery inventiveness clear in blissed-out double-exposures and melodic editing, but some of the most striking moments simply let Bowie’s iconic music videos play out, now in startlingly clear HD for the first time. A must for any fans that are still in mourning.

Ticket to Paradise (April 7)

In this formulaically fun rom-com, Australia’s Sunshine Coast plays Bali, while George Clooney and Julia Roberts play a bitterly divorced pair determined to break up their daughter Kaitlyn Dever’s premature wedding ceremony. She barely knows the dreamy seaweed farmer she’s making a lifelong commitment to, and they’re desperate to ensure she doesn’t make the same marital mistake they did so long ago!! But will the romantic seaside setting bring their former fondness for each other back to the surface? Yeah, absolutely. Everyone watching this knows what’s going to happen, and that’s part of its popcorny charm.
