Colin From Accounts: Season 1 (December 1)

A chaotic couple of single Aussies get a disastrous meet-cute when they’re both somewhat responsible for injuring a stray dog. Whose responsibility is it to care for the mutt, and how much will the pair actually have to depend upon one another? Starring and created by actual couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, this refreshing original sitcom takes advantage of their easy chemistry to great effect. And the supporting characters are a hoot, too, especially Dyer’s irritating boomer mum Lynelle.

Shaq: Miniseries (December 8)

Here’s your chance to get up close and personal with one of basketball’s larger-than-life characters. Produced by HBO, the four-part docuseries chronicles Shaquille O’Neal’s ascent to MVP status, prosperous business career, and four championships. In the trailer, he talks about clowning some fool who insulted him: “‘You’re 6’9 and you can’t dunk?’ I gave him the beat-down of his life.”

The Last Year of Television (December 31)

Over the past couple of years, Mitch McTaggart’s acerbic takedowns of Australian network TV have been a great way to catch up on the daggy madness still happening on our small screens, even as most of us have turned to online entertainment instead. His more general scathing review The Back Side of Television is available on BINGE December 6, but you’ll want to wait until New Years Eve for a timely breakdown of 2022’s most cringeworthy moments. A bit mean-spirited, perhaps, but after all of the silly season’s sentimental treacle it could be just what our square eyes need.

The Batman (December 1)

Finally streaming after its dark ‘n broody cinematic release earlier this year, Matt Reeves’ take on Gotham’s dark knight perhaps didn’t take as many risks as it needed to stand out from the million other decent Batman stories we’ve sat through. But Robert Pattinson was inspired casting, bringing an emo boy vulnerability to rich Bruce Wayne and his less friendly superhero alter ego alike. And hey, Colin Farrell was quite hilarious as The Penguin, too, especially when he rags on Batman and Commissioner Gordon for not figuring out the quite-obvious mystery of the plot yet.

The Drover’s Wife (December 9)

A (very white) Australian bush legend is brought roaring to life in Leah Purcell’s revisionist western epic. Writing, directing, and starring as the Indigenous frontierswoman whose family is threatened by fauna and corrupt men, Purcell more than lives up to the beloved Henry Lawson poem her mother used to read her in bed as a youngun. Our review by Travis Johnson praised the film for its “pleasing and intriguing thematic complexity that refuses to allow space for pat answers and neat interpretations”.

8-Bit Christmas (now streaming)

Released last year, this nicely 80s-flavoured holiday flick is not one of the most familiar entries in BINGE’s mighty list of new and classic Christmas yarns. But it’s worth your time, whether you’re a tech-obsessed little viewer pining for a Christmas gift that Santa can’t quite afford this year, or a misty-eyed nostalgic like Neil Patrick Harris’ character, reminiscing about his childhood desperation for a Nintendo. Kids and adults will find the message of anti-consumerism familiar but funny, as Harris’ younger self pines and saves for the old-timey gaming console by any means necessary.
