Top Picks: TV
Raised by Wolves season 2 (February 3)
The wildly ambitious, religious-themed sci-fi drama returns, following the exploits of two androids, Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) on an alien planet as they attempt to raise a colony of humans raised from embryos.
Unfortunately, a pitched war between militant Atheists and fundamentalist Mithraics soon intrudes. Thoughtful, austere, and occasionally hellishly violent, this is an absolute gift for fans of hard sci-fi.
The Girl Before (February 10)
When a young woman (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) finds a dream house, she agrees to abide by the architect’s (David Oyelowo) strict rules in order to secure the rental, only to slowly discover she’s not the first person to live there…and the previous occupant may have met with an awful fate. This four-part psychodrama might be the only thing scarier than the London housing market.
Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 (February 21)
Join the young crew of the USS Protostar, voiced by Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Rylee Alazraqui, and Dee Bradley Baker, as they attempt to make the trek (heh!) from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant, learning to work together as a team along the way. This CGI sci-fi adventure is the first Star Trek series specifically targeted at younger viewers, so if you’re of a mind to make your kids into Trekkies, this is their gateway drug.
Top Picks: Movies
An American Pickle (February 4)
A working class Jewish migrant (Seth Rogen) from the early 20th century is accidentally pickled in a factory accident, somehow survives, and is revived a hundred years later, where he must contend with both the modern world and his nebbish, ineffectual descendant (Rogen again). An American Pickle is a dry, wry comedy that also functions as a meditation on heritage and history, giving Rogen more to chew on than he usually gets.
A Quiet Place Part II (February 11)
Following on from John Krasinski’s smash hit horror movie, Part II sees the Abbot family, including mum Emily Blunt, deaf daughter Millicent Simmonds, son Noah Jupe, and the newborn baby, try to reach a sanctuary far from the sound-seeking monsters that have wiped out most of humanity. Help comes in the form of hermit Cillian Murphy, but everyone concerned will learn that some threats are all too human. Krasinski is once again on directing duties and delivers a jolt of high-class horror in this welcome sequel.
Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins (February 25)
Henry Golding takes up the mantle and mask of G.I. Joe’s premiere ninja in this origin story, that sees him journeying to Japan to earn the ways of the Arashikage ninja clan alongside frenemy Storm Shadow (Andrew Koji), slaughtering plenty of Yakuza mooks along the way. Wall to wall martial arts action ensues, with director Robert Schwentke drenching it all in neon and rain to stylish effect.
