Ted: Season 1 (January 11)
Less fuzzy and comforting than funny and foul-mouthed, Seth MacFarlane’s animated teddy bear gets his own prequel series. Since it’s set in the 1990s, there’s no Marky-Mark—but we do get a younger actor playing his character as a Boston teen. Ted is a terrible influence on the youngster, but he’s also a devoted buddy, hopefully setting us up for some sweet moments in between the swearing and drinking and mischief.
True Detective: Night Country (January 15)
The newest season of HBO’s anthology crime series is onto something clever by casting Clarice Starling herself as its latest protagonist. Jodie Foster will bring a new sheen of prestige to the show as an Alaskan cop trying to figure out where eight Arctic researchers disappeared to. With frosty landscapes, a chilling noir plot, and a supporting cast that includes Kali Reis, John Hawkes, and Christopher Eccleston, this is one to look forward to every week—even if it’s sweltering and sunny outside.
In The Know (January 25)
Stop-motion meets workplace comedy, in this latest social satire from King of the Hill creator Mike Judge. Zach Woods voices the nebbish host of public radio’s “third-most-popular interview program”, a thoughtful little nerd who also happens to be an animated puppet. His coworkers (among them Caitlin Reilly, Judge himself, Carl Tart, and Succession icon J. Smith Cameron) are a blend of clay freaks and dumb humans alike, hopefully resulted in a hilarious multi-media portrait of modern offices.

Paint (January 13)
Haven’t heard great things about this dramedy clearly based on the smily persona of Bob Ross, but Owen Wilson with an afro and paintbrush in hand is too good to pass up. Playing thinly-veiled Ross analogue “Carl Nargle”, Wilson is the welcoming, whispering host of a successful public access TV show teaching viewers how to paint serene landscapes. When a younger artist steals his spotlight, though, no amount of happy little trees can keep Wilson’s protagonist calm.
No Hard Feelings (January 20)
Toiling in the trenches of stern, self-serious Oscar-bait drama for a tad too long, Jennifer Lawrence takes a welcome comedy role in this raunchy studio comedy. Our own Steve Newall got to interview J.Law and her co-star Andrew Barth Feldman back in June, and learned that the leading lady reckons audiences are “not ready” for her film’s show-stopping nude beach scene. Playing a washed-up young woman assigned to help a dweeby rich kid get laid, she’s a hoot and a half.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (January 28)
With every limp popstar biopic and behind-the-scenes doco we sit through, The Lonely Island’s 2016 send-up only gets more hilarious. Andy Samberg is the Bieber-esque international pop icon Conner4Real, whose hit songs cover topics like the overrated attractiveness of the Mona Lisa and how Spanish people speak with a lil lisp sometimes. It’s a millennial response to Spinal Tap, with wild cameos from a British-accented Emma Stone, Seal, and many more.
