Best new movies and TV series on BINGE: July 2022
Each month, new films and TV shows are added to BINGE’s library. Travis Johnson presents his picks for titles worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.
Top Picks: TV
The Larry Sanders Show (July 6)
One of the most acclaimed sitcoms of all time lands on Binge, with all six seasons—a whopping 90 episodes—dropping on the same day. The late and much revered Garry Shandling is late night talk show host Larry Sanders, whose job seems to mostly consist of dealing with the fevered egos of his various celebrity guests.
The show’s ensemble includes producer Arthur “Artie” (Rip Torn), sidekick Hank Kingsley (Jeffrey Tambor). Janeane Garofalo, Bob Odenkirk and Jeremy Piven, in addition to a staggering number of A-list guests that turn up to be mercilessly skewered in this rarely bettered show business satire.
What We Do in The Shadows season 4 (July 14)
The undead kings and queens of Staten Island return for a fourth serving of gothic goofiness! Spun off from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s superb 2014 mockumentary, What We Do in The Shadows follows the exploits of a small coterie of vampires (Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Mark Proksch) and their servile human familiar (Harvey Guillén) as they try to reconcile their necromantic existence with the petty challenges of sharing a house. Blisteringly funny.
American Horror Stories season 2 (July 22)
Another spin off, this one drawn from Ryan Murphy’s acclaimed, transgressive and surprisingly long-running American Horror Story franchise. This season sees eight episodes of spine-tingling terror grace our screens; unlike its forebear, which trucks in season-long storylines, American Horror Stories is a true anthology series ala The Twilight Zone, offering a whole new mini-movie of the macabre every episode.
Bella Thorne, Max Greenfield, Madison Iseman, Quvenzhané Wallis, Judith Light and Gabourey Sidibe are part of this season’s impressive cast, no doubt keen to be slaughtered on screen for our entertainment in a variety of novel ways.
Top Picks: Movies
Mystic River (July 1)
Clint Eastwood directs this adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s acclaimed crime novel, in which three old friends (Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon) in working class Boston are forced to confront their own long-hidden childhood trauma, after Penn’s daughter is found brutally murdered. Eastwood and screenwriter Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) eschew whodunnit theatrics to instead present a mosaic portrait of a community in crisis, as Penn’s determination to avenge his child sends ripples throughout the town.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (July 8)
Ang Lee’s superb and sumptuous wuxia fantasy has lost none its power in the two decades since it first blew the minds of western audiences unaccustomed to China’s brand of high-flying cinematic fantasy. The great Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh are two veteran warriors whose secret yearning for one another may finally be fulfilled.
Except, Zhang Ziyi’s rebellious princess steals a priceless antique sword and runs off to be a wandering soldier of fortune, rather than be subjected to the strict gender roles of 19th century China. Lee employs a painterly approach here, which may sound a little sedate to action fans, but the fight choreography and wire work by legendary martial artist Yuen Woo-ping are simply breathtaking.
Her (July 10)
Provocative filmmaker Spike Jonze presents a thoughtful science fiction film wherein Joaquin Phoenix’s lonely sad sack finally finds true love… with an operating system (voiced by Scarlet Johansson). What could have been played for laughs is instead a quiet meditation on loneliness, alienation, our relationship with technology and even the nature of consciousness itself/
It becomes apparent that Johansson’s breathy A.I. could ace the Turing Test without studying. What seemed remarkably prescient back when it was first released in 2013 is even more timely now, given our current fragmented, isolated age.
