Best new movies and TV series on BINGE: March 2025

Your jam-packed guide to everything landing on BINGE this month.

Top Picks: TV

Smoggie Queens: Season 1 (March 3)

We’re all born naked and the rest is drag: some people are just very unskilled, sloppy drag queens, as it turns out. Phil Dunning creates and stars in this sweet-hearted queer sitcom, about a found family of dysfunctional gays (and their token hetero housemate) living in Middlesborough, UK (‘Smoggie’ is another term for locals).

Dunning’s self-obsessed protagonist Dickie has just been dumped and can’t draw on a good drag eyebrow to save his life, but his problems will probably pale in comparison to the effervescent, chaotic, diverse circumstances of the mob he’s sharing a flat with. The show’s earned solid reviews so far, and it’s screening right as Sydney Mardi Gras hits the streets!

The Righteous Gemstones: Season 4 (March 10)

Danny McBride’s hilarious and sacrilegious comedy delivers its final sermon with this fourth season—all good things must come to an end! Walton Goggins, who plays the delightfully scummy Uncle Baby Billy, is probably too booked and blessed to continue appearing in the show, and McBride and his screen sister Edi Patterson are already signed on to produce some new show about Southern vampires, which will also rule…

But by the majesty of Eli Gemstone, will I be sad to see the Gemstone family saga meet its end! Punching up at the corruption and idiocy of moneyed so-called religious leaders, and simultaneously delivering some surprisingly deft character development, don’t let Gemstones be one of those shows you only catch years after its peak, leaving you falling to your knees and praying for forgiveness that you weren’t around for the comic rapture.

The Last Anniversary: Season 1 Premiere (March 27)

Novelist Liane Moriarty has been an absolute godsend to the Aussie screen industry, her pulpy plots and secretive characters being a reliable generator for addictive TV. Her patron saint Nicole Kidman seemingly skipped this Australia-set venture, appearing only as an executive producer (as far as we can tell?). Instead, we get Teresa Palmer, Danielle Macdonald, Helen Thomson and Susan Prior as well as Brit Miranda Richardson, weaving a tale of intrigue that kicks off with Palmer inheriting her ex’s great-aunt’s island home. Pour out a generous glug of cab sav!

Top Picks: Movies

The Watchers (March 4)

2024 was a big year for M. Night Shyamalan: the dude put out a great new thriller himself, which starred one of his daughters in a pretty terrible damsel-in-distress role. Just before that, though, his other kid Ishana helmed this eerie sci-fi, a solid companion to the above Aotearoa flick, actually.

Starring Dakota Fanning, it’s a bit of a mystery box of a feature, trapping some unsuspecting folks in a glass box in the woods to gaze outwards at mysterious entities beyond. Are they keeping guard, or merely being shown off for some sinister purposes? In her dad’s twisty tradition, Shyamalan Jr. wouldn’t want me to give anything too solid away.

I Saw The TV Glow (March 13)

“Because TV Glow unfolds with such a patient, unwavering momentum, like a fairytale with a predestined ending, it’s difficult to talk about where this impossible place is without making the reveal sound simplistic, or risk spoiling the film’s greater resonance.” These are the words of Rory Doherty, reviewing Jane Schoenbrun’s sensational and painfully nostalgic sophomore feature, and I’ll mirror them here.

You kind of need to experience the tale of lonely 90s kids Owen and Maddie yourself; of their obsession with surreal teen show ‘The Pink Opaque’, and the suburban malaise from which it provides an escape. The movie’s soundtrack absolutely rips, smoke machines and neon lighting transport viewers to another world, and in short Schoenbrun is truly a real one. A bold and sincere director to keep an eye on.

A Quiet Place: Day One (March 14)

This prequel surprised me in its positive reception, with a few reviews claiming that it’s superior to the John Krasinski horror films that first weaved a grim tale of sound-sensitive aliens taking earth hostage. It takes a refreshingly different approach to the Stephen King-y, rural family dynamic of those films, following Lupita Nyong’o’s New Yorker on an existential chase.

Her character’s growing bond with fellow survivor Joseph Quinn is only eclipsed by the chemistry she has with her cat, and Nyong’o was so charmed by the beastie on set that she went from being a cat-hater to a new adoptee. D’awwww! Pig director Michael Sarnoski might have seemed like an unusual pick for such a noisy, hectic horror-survival story, but his handling of the movie’s character drama makes it stand out as much more than just another blockbuster spin-off.
