Best new movies and TV series on BINGE: September 2024

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to BINGE’s library. Eliza Janssen presents her picks for titles worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.

Top Picks: TV

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist (September 5)

Based on a true crime story, this limited series features Black Hollywood’s cream of the crop: Taraji P. Henson, Sam Jackon, Don Cheadle (who’s pretty used to this sort of heist action), Terrence Howard, and Kevin Hart as our main character “Chicken Man.” The setting is buzzy, too, taking place on the night of Muhammad Ali’s doomed 1970 comeback fight. The whole shebang is based on a 2020 podcast that illuminated one armed robbery’s impact on Atlanta, transforming the town into the “Black Mecca.” We’re hoping for a retro funk soundtrack as Hart explains an impossibly elaborate plan to his fellow schemers.

Funny Woman: Season 2 (September 6)

Gemma Arterton returns as groundbreaking comic Barbara Parker, a sadly fictional character who’s battled her fair share of old-school sexism in her rise to the top of Britain’s 1960s comedy scene. Still taken for granted after all the laughs she’s gotten on retrograde late-night shows, she has a crack at the world of arthouse cinema in this sophomore season…but, finding it just as repressive as her original path, she’ll see that the only way to get something done is to do it yourself. Putting together her own comedy show, Arterton’s outspoken stand-up can finally stand up for herself, in this oh-so-English spin on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The Penguin: Season 1 Premiere (September 20)

We’ve been waiting to see this spin-off to 2022’s The Batman for ages, with the first trailer dropping almost a year ago. Can a near-unrecognisable Colin Farrell get us hooked on Gotham’s sordid underbelly again? Pitched as a gritty gangland drama, the show follows Farrell as rising mobster Oz Cobb, keenly usurping the crown from fallen crime boss Carmine Falcone. Thing is, the dead guy’s daughter (the magnetic Christina Milioti) happens to be a psychopathic serial killer fresh outta Arkham, and she’s not going to give up her crooked inheritance without a fight.

Top Picks: Movies

My Old School (September 10)

There is an absolute buttload of documentaries dropping on BINGE this month, covering the following subject matter and much, much more: fashion, literature, Oasis, Scientology, soccer, Trump, spies, and bizarre true stories such as this one. I’m extremely keen to see Alan Cummings in the film’s creatively non-fictional recreations, telling the wild story of a 16-year-old enrolled at a well-to-do Glasgow secondary school. The casting of oddball Cummings might suggest that there’s more to this student than meets the eye, however, proving the dictum that fact is frequently much stranger than fiction.

If scripted stuff has been letting you down lately, BINGE may be the play to be this September.

Wonka (September 13)

Pure imagination, or another bloodless cash-in on beloved intellectual property? I found this prequel, illuminating the early years of one Willy Wonka, to be mostly a delight, energised by Timothée Chalamet’s gamely silly lead performance. None of the movie’s original songs hold a candle to “Pure Imagination” or “The Candy Man”, but supporting turns from British TV talent such as Olivia Colman and Matt Lucas and director Paul King’s whimsical vision makes it a likeable affair overall. Did you know that Willy Wonka likes chocolate not because it tastes good, but because it connects him to his late mum (Sally Hawkins)? Now’s your chance to find out such nuggets of backstory-building!

Mean Girls (September 26)

While we’re recommending one sequel/prequel/remake from last summer, why not give this musical update of Tina Fey’s wicked teen movie a try? Pop princess Renée Rapp is captivating as vicious queen bee Regina George; Auli’i Cravalho makes her mark on rebel Janis Ian; and Fey and Tim Meadows return to their roles from the original 2000s movie, too.

If you’re in two minds on whether to watch, Rory Doherty wrote this review of the remake in January, enthusing that the 2004 film‘s icon status adds to this new take: “it’s why the song numbers, hyper-poppy and earworm-y as they may be, are the true highlights…it’s a fundamentally novel way of engaging with this story that doesn’t invoke comparisons with the original.”
