Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ Australia: August 2024
Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s Australian library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.
Top picks
FX’s A Teacher (August 7)
Released in 2020 but dropping on Disney+ this month, this incisive drama explores the threat of grooming from an underrepresented angle, starring Kate Mara as a Texas high school teacher who falls for one of her underaged students. It’s based on creator Hannah Fidell’s film of the same name, enjoying a little more emotional sprawl and space over 10 anxious episodes. Nick Robinson is bruising as the vulnerable object of desire for someone meant to protect him, and the pair’s chance encounter in this limited series’ finale gives viewers the cathartic release they’ll come to crave.
The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat (August 23)
You might not hear “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” or “Love Child” in this sweet hangout film, but you’ll certainly get to enjoy three strong characters trying to sink back into their perfect harmony. Sanaa Lathan, Uzo Aduba, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor play lifelong friends who have weathered love, loss, and regret together, and who now—in their middle age—find their bond tested more than ever before. Facing each other at a dinky diner, the characters should make you keen to text that mate you haven’t caught up with in ages. Or to bust out some Motown hits.
Only Murders in the Building: Season 4 (August 27)
“Now a major murder picture”, the latest season of this sweet and starry comedy series heads to Hollywood, where our trio of unlikely podcasting buddies are seeing their story get adapted into a feature film. Meryl Streep, hilariously cast as a bad actress in season three, is back, plus new famous faces Zach Galafianakis, Molly Shannon, Eugene Levy and Eva Longoria—but nothing can beat the chemistry of the show’s triple act, Martin, Short, and Gomez. Bizarrely, Only Murders has somehow wound up inhabiting a niche of its own when it comes to contemporary comedy TV; grown-up but not too stuffy, broad but specific in its characterisations.
