Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ Australia: February 2022
Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s Australian library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.
Top picks
Pam & Tommy (February 2)
Retelling ‘the greatest love story ever sold’, this eight-part miniseries aims to set the record straight on Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s headline-grabbing sex tape. Lily James is clad in a bunch of prosthetics to play the Baywatch bae, whereas Sebastian Stan just had to chuck on some tattoos and bad hair metal clothing to be Mötley Crüe’s hard-partying drummer.

All the episodes are directed by Craig Gillespie, who is seemingly having another crack at the formula that worked so well with Margot Robbie from I, Tonya. And gravelly gross-out comedian Jason Mantzoukas has even been revealed as the voice of Tommy Lee’s penis, which…should be a familiar treat for Big Mouth fans, I suppose.
The French Dispatch (February 2)
After only hitting cinemas a few months ago, Wes Anderson’s latest ensemble romp is already available to stream on Disney+. It’s best described as a neatly anthologised love letter to, well, letters themselves: journalists, literary bric-a-brac, the minutiae of publishing and the culture we write down and leave behind in the past.
Tilda Swinton explains the first story to us, all about prisoner Benicio Del Toro and his unexpectedly genius artworks: Frances McDormand and Timothée Chalamet make an unlikely couple in the mod second segment, arguably the film’s weakest plot: but Jeffrey Wright steals the whole fussy ordeal as a food critic based on James Baldwin. He’s where the heart of this brainy, cutesy, animated effort lies.
Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself (February 4)
Wanna see a magic trick? Try this ‘conceptual magic’ show directed by Muppet master Frank Oz, in which storyteller Derek DelGaudio tries to pin down the mystical nature of identity with some unexplainable up-close illusions. No rabbits, disappearing cabinets, or decks of cards needed.
It’s basically a feature-length stage show special, and we’d rather not give away too much more than that. What we can say, is that In & Of Itself is a fully-realised experience that may leave even the most hardened skeptics a little more open to the enchanting illusions at play in everyday life.
