Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ Australia: July 2022

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s Australian library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

The Princess (July 1)

Alongside Belle, Ariel and Elsa, Disney+ is introducing a new, more bloodthirsty princess, in the form of Joey King’s vengeful young fighter. Betrothed to a cruel rival prince, King’s crown-defying badass has to rely on all her martial arts and swordfighting skills to bring back order: a happy ending as we’ve come to expect from Disney is probably not on the cards.

Dominic Cooper plays her awful suitor Julius, and Olga Kurylenko appears as his whip-wielding henchwoman. But I’m tuning in for King, who has managed to bring a steely determination and tenacity to fluffy roles in Netflix rom-coms and early child star appearances in Fargo‘s first season. She doesn’t need to go by any more elaborate or personal name—just ‘the princess’ is all she needs, apparently.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 13)

There’s a lot about this feature-length episode of the sweet animated comedy Bob’s Burgers to remind one of The Simpsons Movie. Both movies cap off a long run of beloved, family-centric gags and songs, and both plots involve a monster sinkhole opening up and ruining the central fam’s domestic situation.

Still voiced with perfectly shaggy ennui by H. Jon Benjamin, Bob is barely keeping it together ahead of a disastrous summer for his burger business. Salvation obviously comes from his three weird kids—Tina, Gene, and Louise—who will save the day in slightly higher definition than the usual low-key look of the sitcom.

The Old Man (July 13)

You reckon Jeff Bridges is too old to get into John Wick mode and lead his own action-thriller assassin series? Well that’s just like, your opinion, man. Lookin’ suave as hell, Bridges stars opposite John Lithgow as a retired CIA operative whose past catches up to him after he’s been living off the grid for a few decades.

One of my faves Alia Shawkat shows up in the supporting cast, fleshing out a series based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. Fans of Bridges from his Coen collaborations in particular will be happy that T. Bone Burnett is behind the score: he came up with the sound of O Brother Where Art Thou?, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Bridges’ Oscar-winning country tunes in Crazy Heart.
