Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ Australia: July 2024

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s Australian library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

Sharkfest (July 1)

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, etc. Donald Trump has recently been ranting about how he’d rather get stuck in a sinking, electrified car than succumb to a great white’s bite, and Disney has serendipitously become shark-infested right on time. The platform’s yearly release of new shark docos includes Anthony Mackie checking out fishy activity on the Gulf Coast, programs about Red Sea Sharks, supersized sharks, “baby sharks in the city” (aww!), and Sharks Gone Viral, apparently a clipshow of sharkfluencer’s most memed moments? The spree might cure your fear of sharks, who have long been vilified in horror cinema and are in fact more victimised by humans than the other way around. Or! It might make you hate the things with a fresh fervour. Thanks, Nat Geo!

Brats (July 5)

What’s in a name? Before young Reagan-era stars like Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald and Emilio Estevez got dubbed “the Brat Pack”, they were merely a vaguely-connected group of handsome famous people: frequently spotted partying together, set to take over Hollywood. In this documentary directed by a member of that very group, Andrew McCarthy, the trajectory of youthful fame and notoriety gives way to a loss of control, with McCarthy interviewing the pretty folks at the centre of the phenomenon to reflect on their shared legacy. Expect to hear some Simple Minds, and to see plenty of clips of St. Elmo’s Fire (a terrible, terrible film btw!!).

Descendants: The Rise of Red (July 12)

Disney continues to play an Ouroboros eating its own IP tail, in this ongoing original film franchise that recasts classic animated princesses and bad guys as blinged-out teens at a fantasy school. This time around, singers Brandy and Rita Ora are Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts, and their daughters will have to mess around with time travel in order to change their mum’s destinies and arrive at a happy ending everyone’s happy with. In July, Disney+ is also releasing Sing-Along versions of every other film in the Descendants series, so kids who know what’s up can croon along to every big ballad that Maleficent’s daughter or Cruella de Vil’s son ever belted.
