Top picks
Artemis Fowl (June 12)
Based on the best-selling fantasy series by Eoin Colfer, this big budget film adaptation will take viewers young and old into a warped world of fairy cops, child geniuses, and dwarves played by Josh Gad. The movie’s directed by legendary British ham Kenneth Branagh, which should bring a sense of CGI bombast and wonder to the story of Artemis Fowl, an Irish child prodigy tossed headfirst into a secret world of mystical beings to rescue his kidnapped father. I was deeply obsessed with these books as a nine-year-old, and I’m stoked that Disney got big names such as Judi Dench and Colin Farrell to appear in supporting roles for the first big-screen retelling of the story (or small screen, rather – thanks COVID!).
Into The Unknown: Making Frozen 2 (June 26)
Making a movie is already difficult, but making a feature-length animated follow-up to the most successful animated film of all time sounds damn near impossible. That’s why Into The Unknown sounds so intriguing, giving Disney fans and animation nerds access into the development of Frozen 2, counting down from a year before the film’s feted release. Over six episodes, the series promises to capture the ‘challenges and breakthroughs, the artistry and complexity’ of creating a 3D-animated feature film; it’s the closest any of us will get to seeing Disney magic conjured into being right before our very eyes.
Schoolhouse Rock: season one (June 5)
From 1973 to 1984, Schoolhouse Rock did the TV equivalent of sneaking broccoli into your kid’s favourite cheesy pasta dish; making education fun through funky musical sequences that many adults can still eagerly recite. Watching the first season of the retro series with your kids could be the perfectly corny hit of nostalgia and edutainment your family needs; you might all learn a thing or two through songs like ’Three Is A Magic Number’ and ‘Conjunction Junction’. As a nice bonus, each episode is but a few minutes long, making them a perfect fun-size snippet for kiddos with short attention spans.
