Quiz Lady (November 3)
Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as two very different sisters on a madcap road trip? And Sandra Oh’s playing the wild and crazy one?!! The casting of this new comedy is reason enough to tune in, as both funny women should have great chemistry together as they head cross-country, trying to cash in on Awkafina’s genius trivia skills in order to rescue her beloved pet pooch. How exactly do those two plots knit together? We couldn’t care less, really: check out Sandra’s costume in the thumbnail above. Says it all, really.
Faraway Downs (November 26)
Nobody had ever heard of the country “Australia” until Baz Luhrmann made a sprawling 2008 documentary about it, following the obscure country’s two most attractive locals (Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman) around their typical day-to-day activities. And only Baz would have the balls to insist on re-screening that masterwork again, in the form of an episodic, six-part series this time around. Throw some Vegemite on the barbie and tie me kangaroo onto me ute, will ya sheila?
Doctor Who: Specials (November 26)
Like the TARDIS, this series of Christmas specials is much more of a big deal than it first seems. First up: fan fave 10th Doctor David Tennant is back. Secondly, he’s reunited with beloved companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), her memories of him now seemingly un-wiped. Thirdly, he’s facing off against a foppish bad guy played by Neil Patrick Harris, seemingly doing a German accent? And fourthly, the trailer above teases that Tennant will turn into the new doctor Ncuti Gatwa by the time January rolls around. “The Star Beast” premieres on November 26, with “Wild Blue Yonder” on December 3 and “The Giggle” on December 10.
