Top picks

FX’s Say Nothing: Limited Series Premiere (November 14)

Based on the bestselling non-fiction chronicle of the same name from writer Patrick Radden Keefe, this miniseries should be an absorbing education in the main players, bloodiest stand-offs, and long-repressed secrets of the IRA movement. I absolutely chomped through the book recently, and indeed many of its most shocking turns feel ready for a screen dramatisation: with weighty questions about how violence begets violence, and institutionalised aggression versus rangier grassroots activism, the text and its stories deserve to be heard by a bigger audience. The cast of characters include leaders Gerry Adams and Brendan Hughes, but the heart of the story might be rebel Dolours Price, whose hunger strikes whilst imprisoned for London car bombings should be incredibly difficult to watch if portrayed accurately.

Interior Chinatown: Season 1 Premiere (November 19)

Ever feel like a background character in your own story? This slippery, metafictional series questions just that, starring the charming Jimmy O. Yang as an extra in a cop procedural show. When the struggling actor witnesses criminal shenanigans that accidentally place him at the centre of the drama, he’ll enjoy some long-earned recognition…but also, perhaps, wind up risking his own life in the spotlight. Comic Ronny Chieng and action actress Chloe Bennett are amongst the supporting cast, and Taika Waititi is a producer—but best of all, the showrunner is the novelist who wrote the book the show’s based upon, so readers who enjoyed the kung fu antics of the novel of the same name should definitely tune in.

Beatles ’64 (November 29)

1964 was, to put it extremely mildly, a big year for The Beatles. It’s the year in which they first touched down in the US, erupting in popularity with their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and now that seminal chapter can be witnessed by modern-day fans in the form of never-before-seen footage. Martin Scorsese’s one of the producers, nabbing the approval of Paul and Ringo plus George and John’s offspring to edit and re-release some of the iconic band’s most unforgettable moments—plus intimate scenes of camaraderie, capturing four friends on the brink of history. Sounds like a much more digestible insight than Peter Jackson’s mammoth insight to the “Get Back” recording sessions, that capture the end of the gang’s time together.
