Top picks
Last Days of the Space Age: Season 1 (October 2)
An original, scripted, Australian production? On my Disney+ subscription? This is practically unheard of, so hopefully this downhearted period piece can give us the robust local content we’ve been waiting for from the mega-global streaming service. For three Aussie families, men bouncing around on the moon are just about the least exciting thing going on in their lives, ranging from teen rebellion to community prejudice and a beauty pageant with unexpected ties to the Soviet union. Radha Mitchell, Deborah Mailman and Iain Glen are amongst the stellar cast, and a coastal community in 1970s Western Australia is a fruitful setting: let’s hope it delivers.
Hold Your Breath (October 3)
Sarah Paulson showed tremendous depth and expressiveness as a creepy helicopter mum in Run, so we’re keen to see her operating in a hysterical horror mode once more. Here she’s a 1930s housewife in Dustbowl-era Oklahoma, who’s not sure what to believe when she senses something sinister in the tormenting elements that surround her homestead. It all sounds pretty reminiscent of the epic silent film The Wind, also about a woman buffeted by invisible forces of nature that seem tied to her loneliness and fragile state as a lone female in a forbidding time. Paulson is always a class act, and her performance alone should make this a visceral watch.
Mr Crocket (October 11)
It’s a simple formula for freakiness: take something nice and wholesome, like for instance a daggy kids TV show, and suggest that there’s something scary and awful lying below that shiny, smiley surface. Just in time for Halloween, this new film lets a single mum slowly discover that the VHS tape her kids are obsessed with harbours dark and haunting secrets, all related to the titular grinning host of a retro TV show. It seems the film has nailed its shabby public access TV aesthetic, but whether or not that’ll translate into truly terrifying scares remains to be seen. If it’s good, though, it could end up being a future spooky season classic: all the warped, anti-nostalgic elements are there.
Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band (October 25)
Hey little Disney+ subscriber, is your daddy home? Did he go and leave you all alone with the TV remote and some speakers ready to blast with the greatest heartland rock anthems of all time? The Boss gives fans never-before-seen access into his touring and performing habits, in this combo of concert doco and rock’n’roll hangout sesh. Springsteen’s creative process will be splayed before us in thrilling footage captured onstage, and in intimate behind-the-scenes moments amongst his devoted fellow musos. And yep, Sil from The Sopranos (Steven Van Zandt) is still on guitar!
