Best new movies and TV series on Disney+ Australia: September 2022

Each month, new films and TV shows are added to Disney+‘s Australian library. Here’s Eliza Janssen’s recommendations for the titles most worth watching. Scroll down for the full list of everything arriving on the platform.

Top picks

Reboot: Season 1

Disney’s kinda poking fun at its own predilection for necromancing old sitcoms from the grave by distributing this self-aware new comedy. It’s about the reluctant cast of fictional sitcom “Step Right Up” coming back together for a shameless, yep, Reboot, and the cast is pretty spectacular: Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Paul Reiser, and Rachel Bloom will definitely draw from their experiences being typecast in other comedy roles. How are these grown-ass adults meant to deal with the overgrown kid character still bringing his mum to set…and then being oblivious to her ongoing affair with Knoxville?

King of the Hill: Seasons 1-13

I tell ya hwhat, I can’t wait to throw on some comfy, simply-animated episodes of this Mike Judge sitcom, now that the entire boxset is going to be available on Disney+. I used to see it as just boring Simpsons, but the Texas-set antics of Hank Hill and his ever-disappointing friends and family are their own charming thing, incisively funny and driven by terrifically sketched characters. The late Brittany Murphy always makes me laugh as Hank’s ditsy niece Luanne, and Bobby is just infectiously loveable, even if that boy ain’t right sometimes. And hey, speaking of Kathy Najimy (who voices the priggish Peggy)…

Hocus Pocus 2

The platform’s biggest event Disney+ Day is on September 8, premiering Tom Hanks as Gepetto in Pinocchio and streaming Thor: Love and Thunder amongst other heavy hitters. But I’m more stoked for September 30, when Disney+ seems to be kicking off Halloween early with some primo spooky titles. That’s when the nearly three-decades-late sequel to Hocus Pocus swoops in with a cackle and a song, featuring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker once more as the wicked Sanderson Sisters. Nothing beat the first movie for very mild, family-friendly scares, and I just pray the second one has an encore performance of Midler’s barnstorming “I Put A Spell On You” cover.
