Top picks
The Little Mermaid (September 6)
Look at this latest animated remake: isn’t it neat? Wouldn’t ya think their collection of remade musical masterpieces is complete? Nope, not without dragging the studio’s fish-out-of-water princess story to the surface of live-action uncanniness. Luke Buckmaster was quite freaked out by the surreal aesthetic of this latest adaptation: “have you seen Sebastian and Ariel’s other little friend, the stripy tropical fish Flounder (Jacob Tremblay)? Their presences were constant immersion breakers, pulling me out of the narrative world. They look weird and freaky and it ain’t right.” Disney superfans won’t mind a bit, though, happily able to check out Ariel’s live-action adventures from the comfort of their own homes.
The Other Black Girl (September 13)
This brand new thriller series takes a familiar, uncomfortable experience for minorities in the workplace—and then twists it into something even more sinister. It’s all about overworked Nella, who is initially stoked when newcomer Hazel joins her editorial team. Finally, she’s not the only Black woman in her ultra-white office! But that initial sense of camaraderie gives way to conspiracy. Based on a best-selling novel, this twisty psychological horror should leave you side-eyeing the passive-aggressive higher-ups at your own workplace.
Welcome to Wrexham: Season 2 (September 13)
Small-town folk might dream of becoming glamorous movie stars—but in this docuseries, it turns out comedy superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney dream of running a small town’s ailing football club. Back in 2020, the celebs purchased the 3rd oldest professional soccer team in the world—North Wales’ Red Dragons—and hoped to transform the dwindling club into underdogs the whole world would root for. This follow-up season will be fascinating, as it can show the first blushes of fame and international attention finally affecting the players and supporters.
