Metallica’s trailblazing Some Kind of Monster – and everything else Netflix AU deleted in June

As any Netflix viewer knows, with one hand the streamer may giveth movies and series, but with the other it taketh away… Steve Newall lets you know what’s leaving Netflix next month, so you can arrange some last-chance viewing accordingly.

Craig Mathieson’s 50 best movies on Netflix always requires a few adjustments each month—and June is no exception. He’ll figure out suitable replacements soon enough, but for now, consider watching Best 50 selections Moonlight (leaving June 1) and Blade Runner: The Final Cut (June 2) before they leave Netflix.

Also on Mathieson’s list and bidding farewell: The most painfully honest and funny insight into the music biz since This is Spinal Tap, 2004’s Some Kind of Monster perhaps ought to have buried Metallica, being such an unflattering portrayal of a musical juggernaut that had sold 80 million albums and now found itself creatively becalmed.

The most painfully honest and funny insight into the music biz since This is Spinal Tap, 2004’s Some Kind of Monster perhaps ought to have buried Metallica, being such an unflattering portrayal of a musical juggernaut that had sold 80 million albums and now found itself creatively becalmed. Something interesting was always going to come from the access allowed to documentary filmmakers Berlinger and Sinofsky, who were best known for their Paradise Lost trilogy of docos about the West Memphis Three (heavy-metal-loving teens wrongfully convicted of murdering three children).

Despite starting its life as a ‘making of an album’ doco, some 1200 hours of footage were shot across two years of crisis—capturing everything from the band’s hiring of a therapist to their struggles with writer’s block, the hiring of a new bass player, James Hetfield’s departure to rehab and, eventually, the making of a pretty average album.

In the nearly twenty years since, we’ve grown more accustomed to unvarnished coverage of megastars and idols, with plenty of famous people having faux pas on social media and elsewhere. Our awareness of mental health wellbeing alongside the destigmatisation of professional assistance has increased too. This makes Some Kind of Monster a time capsule in some ways, a trailblazer in others, but certainly no less effective as a film dissecting interpersonal dynamics.

As James Hetfield observes in the press conference above, the film blows away the mystique of the rock idol. When pretence, defensiveness and self-deception fall away (to some extent), this is a classic example of doco makers being in the right place at the wrong time, armed with a relentless, inquisitory camera that the people on screen are perhaps not media-trained enough to manipulate.

It’s so quotable, so entertaining, and through the passage of time, more relatable and moving. Speaking of the passage of time, please join me in saluting Lars’s dad (RIP).

Metallica: Some Kind of Monster leaves Netflix on June 13. Read on for the full list of departing titles, and prepare yourself to farewell a large number of other faves, including the likes of The Dish, Midsommar, A History of Violence, L.A. Confidential, Amadeus, Hustlers, Pretty Woman, and the first eight movies in the Fast & Furious series.
