Following our recent list of the best films of 2018 so far, we look ahead at the films we’re most excited to see during the rest of this year. While over half of the following films have certified release dates for New Zealand cinemas, a few still have uncertain fates (keep crossing those fingers).
Once again, we have picks from Paul Casserly, Dominic Corry, Adam Fresco, Matt Glasby, Liam Maguren, Steve Newall, Katie Parker, Amanda Jane Robinson, Daniel Rutledge, Tony Stamp, Sarah Voon and Aaron Yap. Each contributed a top 5, which we tallied up to get the following top ten.
10. Widows

Oscar winner Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) co-writes and directs Viola Davis, Carrie Coon and Michelle Rodriguez in this heist thriller based on the 1983 TV series. Co-written with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn.

9. Mortal Engines

Adaptation of Philip Reeve’s sci-fi novel series about a dystopian future where entire cities move on wheels. Co-produced and co-written by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, starring Robert Sheehan and Hera Hilmar.

8. The House that Jack Built

Cannes Palme d’Or enfant terrible Lars von Trier’s psychological horror follows the development of a highly intelligent serial killer (Matt Dillon) over the course of 12 years.

Period thriller from filmmaker Gareth Evans (The Raid), following a man trying to save his sister from a religious cult. Stars Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast) and Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon).
4. BlacKkKlansman

An African-American police officer from Colorado infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan and becomes head of the local chapter in this Spike Lee crime drama based on a true story.

3. Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) are back, along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in one of the highest reviewed M:I films ever.
