Outrageous (and outrageously successful) Bridesmaids – and everything else leaving Netflix in September
As any Netflix viewer knows, with one hand the streamer may giveth movies and series, but with the other it taketh away… Steve Newall lets you know what’s leaving Netflix each month, so you can arrange some last-chance viewing accordingly.
Craig Mathieson’s 50 best movies on Netflix always requires some adjustment each month as titles depart the streaming platform—and September is no exception. He’ll figure out suitable replacements soon enough, but for now, consider watching Best 50 selection Election, a superb Hong Kong crime thriller, before it leaves Netflix on September 1.
Also on Mathieson’s list and bidding farewell… Bridesmaids, the film that propelled Kristen Wiig from scene-stealing supporting roles to stardom—and corrected misogynist myths about funny women.
Just look at that lineup of comedy talent above—it’s ridiculous. As was the “conventional wisdom” back in 2011 that a comedy starring women might not work. Not just critically adored, Bridesmaids remains the highest-grossing movie produced by Judd Apatow, wiping the floor with his filmography of generally delayed adolescent, dude-centric pics.
Speaking of… wiping, one of the many achievements of Bridesmaids was in demonstrating that the full range of comedy is open to women. Not just rom-coms but profane shit- and spew-laced laughs—but with a foundation of truths about women’s lives and friendship dynamics. Both outrageous and outrageously successful, this tale of pre-wedding hi (and lo?)-jinks remains a modern classic.
