It all changes, however, when a white lie about losing her virginity (to help boost the reputation of her even more un-cool friend Dan) sees Olive's clean cut image get a make-over, paralleling Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter – a novel she's studying in school.
Other school nerds jump on the fake-sex bandwagon with Olive and she uses the rumour mill to advance her social and financial standing.
