An impoverished and naïve young woman, Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), is sold to a thuggish travelling entertainer, Zampanò (Anthony Quinn, The Don is Dead). The pair traverse the Italian countryside performing together. But when Gelsomina befriends a kindred spirit who convinces Gelsomina to question her choices, the abusive Zampanò becomes jealous.
Directed and co-written by Federico Fellini (8½), this drama also stars Richard Basehart.
