Part martial arts, part spaghetti western, part fantasy epic, Once Upon a Time in Vietnam was written, directed and co-produced by Dustin Nguyen (21 Jump Street, Little Fish) who also stars, as Master Dao, a motorcycle-riding warrior monk.
Dao can't return to his monastery after a lifetime of witnessing so much death and destruction, and now spends his days hunting for deserters. He arrives at remote Sand Village where he rents a room from local baker Hien (Thai Hoa), who is being menaced by local thugs to sell his shop. Dao discovers Hien’s wife is not the mild mannered baker's wife she appears, but is his ex-comrade-in-arms and lover Anh (Thanh Van Ngo), and the baker may not be the father of her son. When Dao challenges the thugs that threaten Hien and Anh, they recruit a rival master (Roger Yuan, Skyfall, Bulletproof Monk).
Once Upon a Time in Vietnam is the directing début for former 21 Jump Street star Dustin Nguyen, whose family fled Saigon for America in 1975. It was picked up for worldwide distribution after a successful showing at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2013. It has the highest budget of any film to come out of Vietnam.
