Rurouni Kenshin

Live-action adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's manga series (28 volumes of which ran from 1994-1999). Set in the early Meiji period, the pic follows wanderer and former assassin Himura Kenshin (Takeru Satô) who traverses the countryside offering protection to those in need, hoping to atone for his life of murder. A massive hit in Japan, two sequels Kyoto Inferno and The Legend Ends followed in 2014.
