Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of S.E. Hinton's coming-of-age novel (written by Hinton when she was just 16). An array of before-they-were-famous actors - including Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez - play working class toughs with fantastic names like Ponyboy, Dallas, Two-Bit and Sodapop. Story follows two rival gangs in 1960s Oklahoma - the Greasers and the Socs. When they clash, the fracas ends with a dead Soc setting off a turbulent chain of events.
Coppola re-released the film in 2005 with about 20 minutes of additional footage and new music.
