A doco about Australian trans activist Georgie Stone is coming to Netflix
As debate rages over transgender rights and both the transgender community and the wider LGBTQI community are under constant attack, the new documentary The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone could not be more timely. Spanning 19 years over the course of 29 minutes, the film follows the life of the titular Australian trans activist, who at the age of 10 became the youngest person in Australia ever to be prescribed hormone blockers for the purpose of gender affirmation.
Netflix subscribers can watch The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone from September 22.
Stone first came to public attention in 2014 when she appeared on Four Corners to talk about her experiences challenging the legal system for the right to transition. Since then, she was been a fearless and prolific advocate for trans children. From 2019 she appeared on the long-running soap Neighbours as Mackenzie Hargreaves, the series first trans character, in the process becoming only the second trans actress to portray a trans character on the Australian small screen.
Directed by Maya Newell (In My Blood It Runs, Gayby Baby) the film follows both Georgie’s personal journey and her taking up a public position as a vocal trans advocate—work which has won her, among other plaudits, Membership in the Order of Australia.
Speaking about the film, Stone noted that “While I really want this documentary to reach out to trans people, there is the hope that people who are not trans will watch it and learn something.”
We can only agree. Fingers crossed this film gets the audience it deserves.
