A virtual Q&A is taking place across Australia this Wednesday to celebrate My Name Is Gulpilil
On the evening before the national release of My Name Is Gulpilil, audiences across all states and territories can unite for an interactive event bringing them closer than ever to an Australian screen legend’s life and legacy.
This May 26, your favourite cinema may be amongst the slew of venues screening a live, interactive Q&A on David Gulpilil, with a panel of special people close to the actor and his cinematic achievements. Here’s who’s involved, where it’s all going down and how you can be there to experience it.
We’ve already clued you in on the release of My Name Is Gulpilil, a biographical doco on one of our most impactful Indigenous performers that’s coming out in cinemas this week. Now, cinemas around the country are uniting for a live-streamed event honouring a 50 year screen career with those who know best (apart from Gulpilil himself, that is).
The panel includes Gulpilil’s friends and screen authorities Jack Thompson OAM PhD and Margaret Pomeranz, Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre Stephen Page, and Witiyana Marika, the producer and star of High Ground who also founded the band Yothu Yindi.
The documentary received a standing ovation at the Adelaide Film Festival, which Gulpilil attended in person. Still standing after 50 years of acting and a terminal illness diagnosis, the actor’s life story makes a fascinating feature, focused on both his traditional Arnhem Land roots and the international fame Gulpilil experienced after the success of hits like Crocodile Dundee and Charlie’s Country.
Hosted by Yolngu woman and founder of the Marngrook Footy Show Leila Gurruwiwi, this collaborative national event is coming live to a cinema near you on the evening of May 26, with attending viewers able to send questions in via a QR code on the movie screen.
We’ve got a comprehensive list below of all the cinemas that are taking part, but if you miss your chance? No worries; you can learn all about Gulpilil’s mesmering screen work and complex life story when My Name Is Gulpilil is released on May 27.
