A24 is auctioning off their most iconic movie props in support of COVID-19 relief
Whilst stuck inside with nothing to do, it can be tempting to go ham on an online shopping spree. What could be a better feeling than bringing excitement right to your door, some extravagant purchase waiting to be unboxed on your doorstep?
It’s also important to be somewhat rational in these tense times, though. And so it is with dual caution and excitement that I present to you A24’s series of charity auctions, wherein the trendy production company is selling off bits and bobs from the sets of their most popular movies in the name of coronavirus relief.
In only a decade or so, A24 has quickly established itself as the film snob’s pet production company, churning out subversive and consistently terrific titles like, most recently, Uncut Gems and The Lighthouse. They have a huge fanbase of movie nerds, and now the company’s clever enough to realise that they can raise some serious dough for those who really need it by selling memorabilia to those rabid fans. Loved Midsommar? You sick freak. Why not own two of the film’s most pivotal costumes?
A quick glance at the A24 Auction website reveals that, for instance, the creepy ‘Annie’ doormat from Hereditary is currently going for $5,000. Somebody make a higher bid on it quick, lest it be snapped up by a cult of Paimon worshippers!
What’s cute is that each of the movie-themed auctions has been tied to a different New York not-for-profit organisation. All sales from the 18 items in the Uncut Gems lot are going towards Queens Community House, an intersectional settlement house not too far from where the Adam Sandler movie would’ve been filmed.
One of the more affordable items up for grabs right now is a pair of goggles worn by a character named Gabe in Bo Burnham’s coming-of-age drama Eighth Grade. Do I remember who Gabe is, or what part his swimming goggles play in that film? No! But I still want them!
If there’s a too-cool-for-school movie nerd in your life with a birthday coming up, or if you just wanna treat yourself to something you’ll never use but rake in a lot of street cred for, the series of A24 auctions will take place until mid-May.
