Bergman Island is in cinemas now: a couples retreat straight out of cinema history
A beautiful pair of pairings confront their relationship issues in Bergman Island, the newest drama from director Mia Hansen-Løve.
The first are Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps, married filmmakers each trying to work on their own separate screenplays. Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie, meanwhile, play former lovers whose paths cross at a mutual friend’s wedding. You can see it all go down in Bergman Island, now playing in Australian cinemas.
Actually named Fårö, the titular island is now best known as the isolated summer resort where legendary Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman lived and died. Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Scenes from a Marriage: all were shot on the visually serene island, with tempestuous moods bubbling below.
Expect more scenes from more marriages in the trailer below, where Krieps grapples with creating “a great body of work and raising a family at the same time”. Her next great piece of work seems to be the romance which Wasikowska is struggling with. There are many tears and sunsets and ABBA dance parties on the horizon.
We published an interview with Mia Wasikowska, where she told Stephen A Russell that the production of Bergman Island was about as idyllic as the location seems at first glance. “It felt like quite a happy-go-lucky set,” the Aussie actor explained. “The first day I was on the set we waited on the beach for two hours just for the sun to come out from behind the clouds.”
Apparently you don’t need to be a Bergman fanatic to appreciate the context of this new film, either. Wasikowska considers it to be more similar to the films of Eric Rohmer, honing in on yearning, lovesick characters who are simultaneously determined to find independence.
