From Adam Goodes to Aretha Franklin: Sydney Film Festival unveils its first 25 films for 2019
Nothing stokes the fires of Sydney cinephiles quite like announcements of films on the lineup for the Sydney Film Festival.
Ahead of the official program launch on Wednesday May 8, the festival has revealed its first 25 titles. These films have been described by festival director Nashen Moodley as “a mere taster of the incredible program in store.”
Leading the announcement is The Final Quarter, a documentary about AFL champion and Indigenous leader Adam Goodes. The star player famously called out racism and exposed dark sentiments within the Australian public.
Also on the bill is Amazing Grace, which features a never-before-seen 1972 performance by the great singer/songwriter Aretha Franklin.
Other films announced include the Robert Pattinson sci-fi High Life, the film noir The Wedding Guest (starring Dev Patel) and the comedy-drama Papi Chulo, starring Matt Bomer as a gay TV weatherman.
