Grease returns to cinemas for its 40th anniversary

As the cool kids used to say: we’ve got chills and they’re multiplying.

The crew from Rydell High – including greaser Danny Zuko and Aussie nice gal Sandy Olsson – are returning to the big screen, with their leather jackets and slick hairdos and songs full of sexual innuendo.

We are of course talking about Grease, the beloved musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as love birds Danny and Sandy.

First arriving in 1978, the film is now 40 years old. The celebrate its anniversary, Grease will dance its way back into cinemas, screening at a range of locations across the country throughout August.

In its original theatrical season Grease made big money at the box office. It took close to US$400 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful musicals of all time.

The film has a strong Australian connection in that Newton-John is English-Australian (actually let’s just claim her, like we did with Russell Crowe, and say she is Australian). The celebrated performer was born in England but moved to Melbourne with her family when she was six.

Last year, in an interview with UK Mirror, Newton-John hinted that her and Travolta might be doing something special to honour the film’s 40th birthday. We’re still not sure what she was talking about, but hey, who cares – we get to see this fabulous movie on the big screen again.

Grease, as they say, is the word.
