Here’s Sydney Film Festival’s retrospective on trailblazing Australian women, curated by David Stratton
One of Australia’s most beloved film critics, David Stratton, has put together a program for the Sydney Film Festival celebrating great Australian women filmmakers.
Essential Australian Women Directors – 10 Trailblazers consists of 10 films, each marking a milestone in Australian film history.
The program contains classics such as Sweetie (from Jane Campion), Malcolm (from Nadia Tass), High Tide (from Gillian Armstrong), Love Serenade (from Shirley Barrett) and most recently, The Babadook (from Jennifer Kent).
“In the era of the #MeToo movement, the barriers that once faced women filmmakers are perhaps crumbling at a quicker pace,” Stratton says.
“In the meantime, let’s celebrate the titanic achievements of our women filmmakers, and these landmark works that have irrevocably shifted the industry landscape forever.”
The program is a joint initiative by the Sydney Film Festival and the National Film and Sound Archive.
Entitled Essential Australian Women Directors – 10 Trailblazers will screen at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (from June 5 to June 10) and in Canberra at NFSA’s Arc cinema (June 28 to July 7).
