Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is now streaming in Australia exclusively on Netflix.

What is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F about?

Thirty years on from the utterly unloved third film, Axel F sees the titular wisecracking cop head for the coast after his warned that his estranged daughter, now a lawyer, is in danger after representing a client who was framed by the LAPD. That’s more or less your lot, but the real juice here is getting to hang out with these characters again; pretty much everyone shows up except Ronny Cox. Banging soundtrack, too.

The cast of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Eddie Murphy is, of course, Axel; Taylour Paige is his daughter, Jane Saunders; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is her ex, cop Bobby Abbott; Kevin Bacon shores up a few Bacon numbers as LAPD police captain Cade Grant; brilliant character actor Luis Guzman is a gang boss; and… Judge Reinhold! John Ashton! Bronson Pinchot! Paul Reiser! All reprising their roles as Rosewood, Taggart, Serge, and Friedman, respectively, from the original series.

The youngest of these, Pinchot, is 65, but skin care technology has improved exponentially since the ’80s. so your disbelief is easily suspended. The whole thing is directed by Australian ad man Mark Molloy, making his feature debut.

Why we’re excited about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Because it’s a blast, that’s why. This kind of legacy sequel business has been a bit hit and miss, historically speaking. But Murphy’s easy charm carries the film and Molly recreates the glib, dexterous tone of the original film with no small amount of success. If you love the first two, you’ll love this one (again: nobody likes Beverly Hills Cop III).
