What is English Teacher season 1 about?

We find ourselves in Morrison-Hensley High School, where our titular English Teacher, Evan Marquez, has just broken up with long term boyfriend, Malcolm, is in hot water for kissing said boyfriend in public, and dealing with the day to day difficulties of being an out gay man when he wants to be neither a target nor an unwilling hero. And that’s before hunky new teacher Harry hoves into view. So, expect a workplace comedy – Abbott Elementary strikes us as an obvious comparison – with a special focus on identity politics in our increasingly fractious world.

The cast of English Teacher season 1

Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace) is Evan Marquez; Stephanie Koenig (The Flight Attendant) is Gwen Sanders, Evan’s fellow teacher and best friend; Enrico Colantoni (Just Shoot Me!, Veronica Mars) is Grant Moretti, the principal of the high school; Sean Patton is Markie Hillridge, the schools oafish but avuncular gym teacher; Carmen Christopher is Rick, the school counsellor ; Jordan Firstman is Malcolm, Evan’s ex-boyfriend and a former teacher; and Langston Kerman is Harry, new teacher and absolute hottie.

Why we’re excited about English Teacher season 1

Well, it looks sharp and topical, so that’s two runs on the board right there. Brian Jordan Alvarez has been consistently funny in several supporting roles, so it’s nice to see him get some spotlight time. And the critics have been lavishing English Teacher with praise; over on Rotten Tomatoes it’s getting strong responses from both the professional pundits and general audiences, with the consensus being that the series is both biting and buoyant. Sounds like a winner to us.
