If you’re feeling the need for some gallic romance this holiday season, a little amour on the streets of gay Paree, we’ve got you covered: season 3 of the wildly popular Emily in Paris is now streaming on Netflix.
Yes, we too were shocked and taken aback to learn the title was supposed to rhyme the whole time, and we still can’t bring ourselves to say “Paree” when actually talking about the series, but we’re still keen to revisit the City of Lights with Lily Collins as the titular ingenue, struggling to balance life, love, and work in the most romantic town on earth.
In Clarisse Loughrey’s generous column on the show’s touristy appeal, she compares Emily’s romantic wanderings to one of the French location’s most iconic eateries. “The Champs-Élysées McDonald’s is identical, in vision, to Netflix’s Emily in Paris. Both attempt a harmonious fusion of two cultural stereotypes—American pop vs French finery. The same could be said about Timothée Chalamet. It’s no surprise then, that season three of the series opens with a storyline directly centered on the place.”
“This is so chic. There’s no Grimace. No Hamburgler,” Emily coos. “it’s still McDonald’s, but it’s adapted to the French culture.”
Emily’s besties and coworkers continue to provide some colour and B-storyline brevity in the latest season: wannabe superstar Mindy (Ashley Park), her romance with handsome busker Benoît (Kevin Dias), and, of course, the stunningly jaded Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Emily’s boss at the marketing firm she works for.
It’s all frothy, fashion-forward fun from the creator of Sex and the City, Darren Star, and while the initial critical hubbub around the series was almost wholly derogatory, Emily in Paris has earned a devoted following from fans who just want to spend a little time in the show’s fantasy version of Paris from the comfort of their own couch. And really, who can blame them?
