What is Long Bright River about?
Adapted from the 2020 crime novel of the same name by American author Liz Moore, Long Bright River follows Philadelphia uniformed cop Mickey Fitzpatrick, who is at odds with her estranged and opioid-addicted sister, Kacey. When Kacey disappears, Mickey resolves to move heaven and earth to find her, but she may be too late. A serial killer has begun targeting addicted and homeless sex workers, and Kacey may be one of his victims. From there we bounce back and forth in time as Mickey hunts down both her sister and the killer, while flashbacks fill us in on how the pair got here in the first place.

Why we’re excited about Long Bright River
Well, the book had praise lavished on it, Seyfried has developed into a great actor, and the downbeat vibe has us reflecting on modern gritty classics like The Wire. The focus on the social issue of opioid addiction in particular makes us think this will be more than a straight forward urban drama. If you like your thrills leavened with a hefty dose of social realism, Long Bright River looks like it’ll tick all the right boxes for you.
