Offbeat, offline family film Ron’s Gone Wrong has arrived in cinemas
Kids today spend way too much time in front of their devices. The solution? More time in front of a screen, watching a major studio’s latest CG-animated release!
Ron’s Gone Wrong is a fizzy family feature set in the not-so-distant future, where every child has their own flawless, high-tech ‘B-Bot’. Except one kid (Jack Dylan Grazer), who has the misfortune of getting malfunctioning playmate Ron (Zach Galifianakis) as his new pal. It’s now screening in cinemas around Australia—your chance to stow away the family devices for at least a few hours.
The first film from UK studio Locksmith Animation in association with Disney’s 20th Century Studios, Ron’s Gone Wrong looks like a fairly gentle critique of Big Tech and our obsession with it. Which can be difficult to convey in the very slick, painstaking medium of CG animation. Recall movies like Big Hero 6 and The Incredibles, where progress and technological conquest are both the film’s antagonists and the thrilling focus of every action and comedy setpiece.
The Mitchells Vs The Machines also trod similiar territory to the trailer below, with both films even including Olivia Colman in their supporting cast. I wonder if Apple TV+ would ever release their own take on this kind of story, at the risk of self-sabotage.
There’s a The Hangover reunion going in the cast, with Ed Helms as Barney’s dweeby father and Galifianakis as the titular broken bot friend. “We’ll go to the crusher together!”, he chirps, almost getting his owner mangled on a conveyor belt.
Go offline and make a time to see Ron’s Gone Wrong with the little bots in your life.
