What is Sing Sing about?
The film was directed by Greg Kwedar, who co-wrote the screenplay with Clint Bentley, inspired by the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York, and adapted from the 2005 Esquire article “The Sing Sing Follies” by John H. Richards. Sing Sing tells us the story of John “Divine G” Whitfield, a wronfgully imprisoned man and former actor and playwright who gets a new lease on life particpating in the program. As the troupe prepares to mount a new production by group leader Brent Buell, a newcomer, Divine Eye, threatens to take Divine G’s place as their number one thespian. But this is no Hollywood feel good cookie cutter movie—it’s a measured look at life inside and the elevating power of art, an observational drama that features many former inmates and program participants in the cast.
