What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?
Spinning off from Star Trek: Discovery, this TV movie sees Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou, former empress of the Terran Empire in the Mirror Universe (the one with the goatees and BDSM), running a bar in some shady corner of the Alpha Quadrant. She’s pressganged into working for the titular Section 31, Starfleet’s dirty tricks department, who handle all the nasty business required to keep the wheels turning in the purportedly utopian United Federation of Planets. And that’s about all we know!
The cast of Star Trek: Section 31
Michelle Yeoh is Philippa Georgiou, former evil overlord turned black ops agent, with Miku Martineau plying thee young Georgiou; Omari Hardwick is Alok, Section 31 agent described as a “strategic mastermind with a lot of mental issues”; Kacey Rohl is Rachel Garrett, who will apparently be the captain of the USS Enterprise-C sometime down the track; Sam Richardson is Quasi, a Chameloid Section 31 agent; Sven Ruygrok is the fun-loving, anger-prone Fuzz; Robert Kazinsky is Zeph: A Section 31 agent confined to a mechanical exoskeleton; and Humberly Gonzalez is Melle—a Deltan Section 31 agent who, crucially, has not taken a vow of celibacy (IYKYK).

Why we’re excited about Star Trek: Section 31
I’m of two minds, personally. Michelle Yeoh is always worth watching, Star Trek is one of the greatest sci-fi settings of all time, and the trailer looks great. Having said that, the very concept of Section 31 flies in the face of ol’ Gene Roddenberry’s humanist ideals, so I’m a bit torn. Certainly worth a spin, though.
