How to watch The Red in Australia

And so it was that on October 26, 2024, the 40th anniversary of the release of The Terminator, and coincidentally the 143rd anniversary of the Gunfight at the OK Corral as chronicled in the top notch western, Tombstone, that your humble news gatherer learned that Michael Biehn, the star of both of those films, is now in a movie about a zombie kangaroo.

Life’s funny.

How to watch The Red in Australia

The Red is now screening in Australian cinemas. Probably not for long.

What is The Red about?

Pretty sure we covered the relevant bits, but okay. Formerly titled Zombiroo and released overseas as Rippy (as in Skippy, but surely that title would play better locally), Red sees a Maddy, a young country cop struggling to live up to the legacy of her late father, who finds more pressing matters to deal with when some of the locals turn up dead, ripped to pieces by some… thing.

Her PTSD-addled Vietnam veteran uncle Schmitty swears up and down it was a vicious, unkillable kangaroo. But it couldn’t be… could it?

You know the answer to that.

This one comes to us from director Ryan Coonan, who also co-wrote the script with Richard Barcaricchio.

The cast of The Red

Tess Haubrich (Wolf Creek—the series, not the movie) is Maddie and Michael Biehn is Schmitty. Plus Angie Milliken, Aaron Pedersen, Nathan Jones, Tom Block, and Don Ridges are also in the mix.

Why we’re excited about The Red

I mean sure, why not? It’s a tongue-in-cheek, ocker riff on Jaws, sure, but it looks like fun. And hell, red kangaroos are dangerous enough even when they’re not marauding undead monsters. If this thing manages to strike the right tone, it could be the perfect beer ‘n’ pizza flick for the Halloween weekend. Pretty good cast, too. We may mock, but we love this kind of thing.
