The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has Nic Caged its way into cinemas
Flicks has been absolutely obsessed with Nic Cage lately, and can you blame us? Judging from the mighty efforts of Luke Buckmaster’s Cage Gauge, there is something to celebrate about every single nutty screen role the American acting auteur has ever said yes to. And he says yes a lot.
In Cage’s newest comedy, he plays a heightened version of himself who agrees to show up at a billionaire fanboy’s birthday party for a million dollars. Things go gloriously awry in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, now playing in cinemas around Australia.
Pedro Pascal is adorable as the Cage obsessive Javi, slowly forming a true and deep friendship with his favourite actor. The boys leap off cliffs together, plan out their own half-baked screenplay, and drop acid.
But, as CIA agent Tiffany Haddish informs us, Javi is apparently “one of the most ruthless men on the face of this planet”. Cage must go undercover in his newfound bromance to serve the birthday boy up to Uncle Sam, using his world-class acting skills and meme status to save the day.
In the sweary trailer above, we also get some glimpses of the devil/angel on Cage’s shoulder: a CGI de-aged version of the man himself known as Nicky, who screams his own name as a kind of self-motivational battle cry.
Having seen the movie, we can confirm that Nick, Nicky, and Pascal’s bad guy Javi are all terrific in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Don’t forget to revisit the Cage Gauge to find out where the newest Cage movie ranks amongst every other one of his films.
