What is True Detective season 4 about?
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, every season True Detective drops us into a different locale and a different conspiracy or murder and misdeed. True Detective season 4—subtitled “Night Country”— comes to us from Mexican auteur Issa López, who gave us the excellent Tigers Are Not Afraid a a few years back. López is not only this season’s showrunner, she wrote and directed every episode. What a machine.
And as for the plot? Let’s go to the ever-reliable official synopsis, which tells us: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
Yep, that sounds about right.

Here’s where things get really interesting. Jodie Foster, who has historically proven to be a dab hand at unravelling grisly murders, is playing Detective Liz Danvers, while boxer-turned-actor Kali Reis is her partner, Detective Evangeline Navarro. Rounding out the ensemble are Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, John Hawkes, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Montgrand.

Why we’re excited about True Detective season 4
Look, while subsequent seasons have not matched the incendiary first offering with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, we’re always up for a deep dive into the dark underbelly of the American psyche. And this cast and showrunner simply can’t be beat.
