How to watch Twisters in Australia

Everything old is new again as the 1996 Jan de Bont-directed disaster movie Twister gets the remake treatment. Well, there’s an outside chance it’s a sequel, but it’s hard to tell.

How to watch Twisters in Australia

Twisters is tearing through Australian cinemas like a runaway tornado right now.

What is Twisters about?

Wind!

But in greater detail, the film, directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) sees two rival storm chasers team up to chase storms, more or less. There’s serious scientist Kate Cooper, who is haunted by a disastrous storm that wiped out half her team on her last outing, and then there’s good ole boy Tyler Owens, a reckless social media star who uses storms for clicks.

Many, many things get blown over. There’s also a bit of business about climate change and ethics in science funding, if you’re into that sort of thing, but let’s face it: we know what we’re here for.

The cast of Twisters

Daisy Edgar-Jones is Kate Cooper; man of the moment Glenn Powell is Tyler Owens; In the Heights breakout star Anthony Ramos is fellow storm chaser Javi; Maura Tierney is Kate’s mother, Cathy; Brandon Perea is Boone, Tyler’s videographer; your new Superman, David Corenswet, is Scott, Javi’s business partner; Sasha Lane is drone operator Lilly; and Harry Hadden-Paton is Ben, a British journalist along for the ride.

We also get an appearance by James Paxton, son of the late Bill Paxton, who starred in the original film, which is nice.

Why we’re excited about Twisters

Look, it’s a big old special-effects driver action blockbuster with a rock-solid cast and a decent creative pedigree. We don’t want to shoo anyone off our porch, but we used to get stuff like this all the time, and the fact that we don’t anymore makes each and every new example of the form worth celebrating. Who cares if it’s dumb as a box of hammers (and it really, really is).
