New ‘unrestored’ 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey coming to Australia
Happy birthday 2001: A Space Odyssey! Stanley Kubrick’s mind-bending classic – one of the most acclaimed science fiction movies in the history of the cinema – turns 50 this year.
In honour of 2001’s half-century anniversary, director Christopher Nolan trotted off to Cannes Film Festival earlier this year with a special new ‘unrestored’ 70mm print of the film.
The good news for Australians is that the print is headed down under. Those apes, that monolith and the crazy baby thing in the sky are heading back to our cinemas. So fans of Kubrick’s magnum opus (and who isn’t?) will want to take notice.
According to a recent statement issued by Warner Bros:
“For the first time since the original release, this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits.”
The news gets better for Kubrick fans. Later this year Warner Bros. will release a 4K version of the film for the first time.
But if any movie demands to be seen at the cinema, it is 2001. The film is playing:
In Sydney at the Hayden Orpheum, from May 24 to June 3
In Melbourne at the Astor Theatre, from June 8 to June 24
In Brisbane at Palace Centro, from June 29 to July 1
